How to calculate your MAS thanks to the VAMEVAL test

The Vameval test is one of the many test to calculate the Maximum aerobic speed

We can also mention: 20m Shuttle run, 45-15 FIT

This test is very easy to set up

It requires :

  • an athletics track,
  • cones (spaced every 20m),
  • a soundtrack (Sportbeeper).

Any physical trainer (or sports coach) need to know the MAS of his athlets on order to prepare his training session.  It main goal is to promote progress by avoiding injuries. It is necessary to take into account the age of the athlete and not to neglect the power of the mind.

The well-being of the athlete is to be taken in its entirety.

But : How to organize this VAMEVAL test.

Aim of the VAMEVAL test

This test was created by Georges Cazorla. It consists of following a set running speed by means of beeps.

Run as long as possible around an athletics track at a set speed that will gradually increase to reach the speed limit of the athlete’s capacity.

At each beep, the athlete must be at one of the markers placed on the tracked (every 20m). Explain to the athletes that they must be at the height of a cones when they hear a bee. They can’t get ahead of themselves. The aim is to understand and integrate the imposed pace in order to have a regular race, so as not to have to stop at each marker: by smoothing out your race, you optimise it.

Setting up the VAMEVAL test

  •  Place cones every on the athletics track. The use of an odometer is recommended.
  •  Maximum 3 athletes per cones. The pace is the same for everyone (so you get the idea: no one overtakes anyone). Mais il ne faut pas se gêner quand la vitesse sera plus rapide. For example: K.Mbappé was not among the best in VMA, at 21 or 22, but he was good, between 17 and 19.
  • Bring a soundtrack (or simply take your Sportbeeper).
  • Set up several referees to supervise the test and mark the results (remember to prepare the list of players in advance).
  • Explain the test (PDF du test Vameval de la lafa et FFF)

Conduct of the test :

Aim :

Evaluate your MAS by going to the extreme limit of your physical possibilities. This test also has an important psychological aspect.

La fiabilité des tests VMA dépend de l’investissement du sportif.

Start of the test :

  • The VAMEVAL test starts with 2min at 8km/h. The test is progressive and there is no need to warm-up (it is very slow at 8km/h…)
  • Then the speed increase by 0.5km/h every minutes : this corresponds to crossing a level
  • Attention: One the test starts, we can’t stop it  (so make you sure to understand the test, the laces, the appropriate clothing, and hydration beforehand).

Conduct of the test

Each athlete must be at a marker when the beep sounds. The distance to be covered remains the same: 20 metres, but the speed is increased by 0.5 km/h every minute.)

End of the test

The athlete will stop (or be stopped by the “judges”), as soon as he/she is 3 metres behind on two consecutive poles. This is a personal test, so each athlete will “give up” when he/she is at the end of his/her capacity.

To complet our resultats, you can equip your athletes with tools to measure their heart rate.

The benefits

  • One of the easiest tests to set up to calculate the MAS (We can also mention 20m Shuttle run, 45-15 FIT
  • Can assess up to 30 athletes at a time.
  • Once the physical trainer knows the VMA of his players, he adapts his training and plans the intensity of the training
